MowingTips

When is The Right Time for Your First Mow This Spring?

Spring Has Arrived!

And your lawn is just starting to wake up… slowly, like any of us after a deep sleep.

With warmer temperatures on the horizon, it's time to start thinking green! At Eagleyard, we want you to get the most out of the season, so we’ve created a quick and friendly guide to help with some first steps to kick off the season.

Step 1 — Wait for the Weather to Warm Up

Before touching the mower, shears, or anything with a motor:

  • Wait for air and soil temps to consistently hit 5°C
  • You’ll feel it in the air before the soil catches up
  • Soil usually needs about two weeks to warm up
  • Because this is Canada, timing can beunpredictable
  • But mid–late April is usually when things finally get moving

Why wait?

  • Mowing too early = stressed, cranky grass
  • Cold soil = slow growth and a rough start
  • Grass and its roots need some time to wake up or “activate” after being dormant all winter
  • Warmer soil temperatures allow for microbial activity to kickstart root development and promote growth

Step 2 — Light Spring Cleanup

Once temperatures are ideal and your lawn is dry (not muddy or saturated):

  • Do a gentle rake to remove leaves, twigs, and winter debris
  • Fluff up any matted areas
  • Let the spring sun hit the turf and kickstart that much-needed photosynthesis
  • Avoid heavy raking — we want to wake the lawn, not punish it

Step 3 — Quick Lawn Check

Look for:

  • Thin or bare patches
  • Compaction (soil squeezed tight, reducing airflow, drainage, and root growth)
  • Snow mold (those crusty, matted circles that refuse to perk up)

Snow mold basics:

  • Caused by long‑lasting snow cover and/or cold, wet conditions
  • Looks like matted, crusty patches, while the rest of the lawn is starting to show some vigor
  • Best treatment = sunlight + airflow
  • With the steps above, it usually recovers on its own in 2-4 weeks

Step 4 — First Mow of the Season

Spring is not the time to cut your grass too short — root development and strengthening will just be kicking in.

Before you fire up the mower:

  • Make sure blades are sharp and free from any caked-on thatch or trimmings from the previous season
  • Dull and rusty blades tear grass → yellow tips → sad lawn
  • Keep the first cut light, just a little trim off the top

A friendly reminder that we only suggest cutting your grass shorter than 2.5 inches:

  • Before overseeding (to help seed-to-soil contact)
  • For the last mow of the season (to prevent winter matting)

Step 5 — Admire Your Work

  • You’ve just given your lawn the best start to the growing season
  • Take a breath, enjoy the smell of spring in the air, and revel in that early‑season victory
  • And if you ever want to talk grass, ask questions, or brag about your lawn… we’re just one call away!
