At Eagleyard, we’re dedicated to helping you achieve the healthiest, most vibrant lawn. With spring in full swing, it's the perfect time to overseed, one of the most effective ways to thicken your lawn after a long winter and protect it against weeds and insects.
Timing is Everything
We recommend overseeding in late May, once the soil temperature reaches at least 15°C (59°F). This is the ideal temperature for seed germination and ensures your new grass has the strong start it needs. This is also the best time for a Spring Aeration! Aerating your lawn will help break up compacted soil, creating space for roots to grow deeper and stronger and for seeds to take hold more effectively.
Fall (September) is also a great time to overseed and aerate.
NOTE: Wait to apply seed until after weed treatment! Grass needs at least 3 weeks to take root before applying weed control.
Overseeding Checklist
- Dethatch or give your lawn a vigorous rake to expose as much soil as possible.
- Use a hard landscaping rake to pull out any moss.
- Clean up any debris left from winter.
- Cut your grass to about 2 inches. This is the only time all season we recommend cutting your grass this short! (Normally, we want to keep it around 3 inches.)
- Mix seed with topsoil or compost before application.
- Spread seed evenly.
- If levelling your ground before seeding, apply a Top Coat Mix, which is screened and includes compost and sand.

Watering Schedule: From Seed to Success
Germination Phase (First 2-3 Weeks):
- Water at least once a day for 20 minutes.
- Keep soil consistently moist.
Maturing Phase:
- Water less frequently but more deeply as grass matures. This encourages root growth and drought tolerance.
- Aim for 1.5–2 hours once or twice per week, ideally early in the morning, depending on temperature and rainfall.
Bonus Tip: Liquid Aeration & Watering
If you're getting our Liquid Aeration Service, we recommend watering your lawn for at least 15-20 minutes after treatment. This helps the product penetrate deep into the soil and boosts the effectiveness of your overseeding.
